Efficiency, control and lightness
THINK FAST: The Epic World Cup is the fastest XC race bike on smooth trails, thanks to an unmatched combination of efficiency, control, and light weight. Champion Christopher expresses it this way: “This bike gives me everything I could want from a hardtail, with the added control and capabilities of a full-size.” To create this race machine we took a totally integrated development approach, inventing an entirely new shock absorber, thanks to four decades of victories on the off-road racing stage.
To achieve maximum speed through perfect power transfer efficiency, and an ultra-precise ride, our engineering team set the new standard in terms of torsional stiffness and bottom bracket. The double-diamond layout is the most sophisticated in Specialized’s history, and supports the stiffness objective by integrating the shock as a structural element.
The Specialized Ride Dynamics Team developed a revolutionary technology for the Epic World Cup to give it the efficiency and responsiveness of a hardtail, and in addition the control and capability of a full size. The RockShox SID Deluxe WCID (World Cup Integrated Design) shock with independently adjustable positive and negative air springs gives the Epic WC the coveted “snap” of a hardtail, combined with a lightness that devours the terrain and provides the ability to adjust the set up to suit a specific route or personal preference.
The 75mm of travel of the Epic World Cup behaves as if it were much more. When the bike is ridden in firm mode, it offers the same positive travel as a bike with 100mm travel set at 25% sag. Optimised air volume and damping characteristics allow the Epic WC to handle shocks like a bike with more generous travel. The dedicated MegaJounce pad provides strong support at the end of the stroke to handle the most violent impacts.
An ultra-light frame, unparalleled stiffness at the bottom bracket and revolutionary technology at the shock absorber lead to incredible efficiency. The positive and negative air springs are independently adjustable. Thanks to this feature, the Epic WC has the sought-after “snap” of hardtails, and provides the possibility to adapt the set-up to a specific route.
Control and accuracy
Compared to a hardtail or a bike with lower suspension, the Epic WC keeps the tyres stuck to the ground for longer, which translates directly into more control. More control means more speed. Torsional stiffness for the entire system – from handlebars to frame to wheels. The perfect recipe for agility and steering precision.
With a frame weight of only 1,765 grams (painted, with shock absorber and all components), the Epic World Cup outperforms the lightest bikes on the market. This translates into ease of handling, quicker acceleration, and less energy expenditure when climbing. All this translates into speed.
