The obsession with speed is what drives our research in the road bike sector, in our offices in Vicenza #fulcrumfast is a daily mantra that echoes from the R&D department to conversations with athletes from sponsored professional teams. The creation of the Speed range has always responded to the challenge of producing highly aerodynamic wheels while continuously keeping up with the latest technological and design innovations.
The new circle profile which characterizes the Speed 55 DB is a further step forward in the pursuit of better aerodynamic performance, a model therefore aimed at a demanding and "racing" audience. To improve the rolling resistance (and thus the speed) of the wheel/tire system, we designed this model in the version 2-WAY FIT, therefore fully compatible with both tubeless tires, for better rolling efficiency, and with clinchers. The manufacturing method of the carbon fiber rim without holes in the inner channel – patented construction technology – also allows for a stronger and more robust build capable of withstanding even the most extreme racing conditions. The width of the ring is 19 mm perfectly matches the trend of using increasingly wider tires, a choice that further improves the aerodynamic performance of the wheel/tire system. These data have been validated by studies and intensive wind tunnel tests where we regularly conduct tests on new designs. Speed has proven to be thethe best option in terms of aerodynamic penetration indices of the Fulcrum range and takes the cues from the profiles developed in the tubular version for the World Tour teams.
However, the Speed wheels are not only about aerodynamic performance; to optimize performance, the wheels must also be light and smooth: the scale stops at 1580 grams while for the bearings we have chosen ceramic USB components. The bearings are housed in a front hub made of carbon fiber and a rear hub made of alloy, with holes specifically designed to eliminate excess material.
So much evolution and technology could not fail to pique the interest of the Cofidis Team, especially Elia Viviani, who has already had the chance to test the wheels during training: his feedback was very positive.
