Description
In triathlon, the cycling portion accounts for about 50% of the total race time, and this is where the choice of equipment can make a substantial difference. There is no other component more important in saving you time than the disc wheel. While a traditional disc wheel is already faster than its spoked counterpart, the 321 overturns design concepts to be even faster.
Generally, lenticular wheels are divided into two categories - those with a completely flat profile, made of carbon fiber with a honeycomb foam core, and spoke wheels with a carbon fiber cover. Our habit of overturning designs led us to create the 321 from a single layer of 1k carbon fiber on both sides of the wheel, which meet at the braking track. This type of carbon is rarely used in cycling due to its high cost, but it brings us enormous advantages. It is much lighter than 3k or 12k carbon and can only be worked by the most skilled craftsmen. It is a complicated process, but it is worth it because it provides a smooth ride and is among the lightest wheels on the market. In short, it will spin easily, reducing fatigue over long distances.
Often, stiffness is the main topic in the world of lenticular wheels. It was long thought that high stiffness was directly related to efficient power transfer. However, through numerous field tests, we found that this is not exactly the case. In fact, the initial prototype was so stiff that under stress it did not flex with the frame, causing the brake pads to rub against the rim. This mistakenly created the perception of a wheel that was too flexible when in reality it was too stiff. To solve this problem, we first designed the optimal aerodynamic profile, then developed stiffness targets in combination with the desired overall stiffness of the frame.
Overall weight was a priority in development, but we focused on aerodynamics. Through numerous hours dedicated to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel testing, we managed to create a completely new profile for the category, optimized, together with the tire, for airflow when mounted on the bike. This means that this carbon fiber disc wheel, on the non-drive side, has the highest known aerodynamic efficiency, and on the drive side the best possible in the presence of the derailleur.
To save every possible watt, we have adopted CeramicSpeed bearings and DT Swiss 240 mechanics in the hub. The 321 Disc wheel is tubeless ready and comes with: quick-release, tubeless valve, and SwissStop Black Prince brake pads
